Tasmania is one of our favorite places
Tasmania is the smallest Australian
state, but has some of the best scenery, food, accommodation and
nature in Australia.
Whether yo like hiking remote trails, being coddled in a spa and
then dining on world-class seafood washed down with prize-winning
wines, or lazing at the beach, you can do it - or all - in Tasmania.
While Hobart, with its history, charm and the Salamanca markets
is well-known, and most people visit the convict ruins at Port Arthur,
two of our favorite places are Cradle Mountain Lodge and Freycinet
an hour south of Devonport, Cradle
Mountain Lodge is high in the central mountains
of Tasmania. We suggest two or three days here, to relax, get a
feel for this beautiful area, and enjoy all the lodge has to offer.
Typically you arrive in the late afternoon, and after dinner you
may look around the hotel grounds, which is located within the Cradle
Mountain Lake - St Clair National Park. You can also decide on your
preferred agenda for the next couple of days, selecting from the
many walks and activities available.
By spending two days exploring Cradle
Mountain National Park you can enjoy the walks in cool forest, and
in the open
high country tundra, and to Beautiful Dove Lake and other natural
places. In the evening wildlife can be seen around the lodge, including
often Tasmanian Devils, Quolls, and many birds. Wallabies and Tasmanian
Pademelons, a small forest wallaby, often feed on the grass. There
are wine and cheese tastings in the evenings - Tasmania produced
a variety of world-class cheeses, and some interesting and excellent
wines. You can also enjoy a guided walk within the park - let the
desk know when you would like to do this - and there are many other
optional activities for you to participate in. Lastly, take advantage
of the spa services, especially appreciated after a half day's walk
to recover for the next activity.
